Q: What are the "humanities"?
A: The humanities represent knowledge and appreciation of the works humans make such as literature, history, and the arts, as well as aspects of everyday life like customs and traditions.  Besides history and literature, humanities fields include philosophy, the history and criticism of the arts, religion, the study of languages and linguistics, cultural anthropology and archaeology, law, and other work concerned with humankind's search for meaning and value.

Q: Why "public humanities"?
A: The humanities inspire us all to think critically, solve problems, understand and appreciate cultural differences, become informed citizens, and build a better world for the next generation.

Q: Why are the humanities important?
A:
The humanities -  history, literature, languages, art, philosophy -  focus on creating lives of purpose and meaning, appreciating diversity and complexity, and communicating effectively with others while overcoming adversity. Click here to learn more about the value of humanities.

Q: What is the Stone House Center for Public Humanities (CPH)?
A:
The Stone House Center for Public Humanities connects the university’s humanities faculty and students to the broader community by offering collaborative educational programming, public forums, non-degree courses, workshops, and service-learning opportunities all focused on bringing the insights of the humanities to bear on contemporary public life.

The Center welcomes partnership with community institutions, and values work that transcends both academic disciplines and the boundary between campus and the larger community. Contact us to learn more.

Q: How is the Center supported?
A: CPH funding comes from a combination of university funding, programming revenue, individual donations, and outside grant sources.  The last two make up the bulk of the Center's operating budget. Click here to learn more.

Q: How can I find out about upcoming events in my area?
A: Check out our blog as well as our news and events page. Don't forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

Q: How can I hold a community event in collaboration with the Stone House Center for Public Humanities?
A:
Our mission is community-driven. Whether it's providing unique opportunities for the Western Pennsylvania community to celebrate cultural heritage, fostering innovative educational experiences, or highlighting the humanities’ relevance to contemporary life, we would love to work with you! Please contact us here. Be sure to also check out our current events.

Q: How can I learn more about the CPH?
A:
You can download our brochure here.

Q: How can I get involved?
A:
We are always looking for faculty to teach in our Humanities Ladder program. Each semester we also hire student mentors. SRU students can learn more about the position and apply here. Volunteer and other paid opportunities will be posted on our blog, so check back frequently.
