The Stone House Center for Public Humanities (CPH) is a project of Slippery Rock University. The CPH connects the university’s humanities faculty and students to the broader community by offering collaborative educational programming, public forums, non-degree courses, workshops, and service-learning opportunities, all focused on bringing the insights of the humanities to bear on contemporary public life. The CPH is supported by Slippery Rock University, grants, and donors.

Our Mission & Vision

Our mission at CPH is to help establish a community of learners enriched, engaged and enlightened through the humanities. We want to provide unique opportunities for the Western Pennsylvania community to celebrate cultural heritage, foster innovative educational experiences, and highlight the humanities’ relevance to contemporary life.

Our Values

Accessibility: The humanities are not luxuries, but essential components of a thoughtful and ethical life.  Thus they should be made broadly accessible to people from all walks of life, without regard to age, race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or socioeconomic status.  The CPH focuses on connecting with populations for whom engagement with the humanities is limited by social or economic barriers.
Collaboration: The CPH welcomes partnerships with community institutions that transcend both academic disciplines and the boundary between campus and the larger community.
Citizenship: The humanities provide unique insights into the relationship between individuals and society, and can play an important role in building local community and enabling individuals to be active and contributing citizens
High-Impact Learning: The CPH provides Slippery Rock University students with opportunities for service-learning, collaborative research, and community engagement. These learning experiences are proven to lead to academic and professional success.
